Acclaimed stage and screen actress Karen Ludwig will star in WHERE WAS I? directed by two-time Emmy Award winner Dorothy Lyman. Previews begin September 1 at Theatre 54. Opening is slated for Thursday, September 3.
From playing Meryl Streep's lover in Woody Allen's Manhattan, to her heart-rending film portrayal of Ethel Rosenberg in Citizen Cohn, to her many on and Off-Broadway theater performances, Karen Ludwig has shared the New York stage and screen for over four decades with some of Broadway and Hollywood’s biggest stars.
Now, in WHERE WAS I?, Karen tells the funny and poignant story of a lifetime spent in one of our most passionate professions. From her quirky Jewish upbringing in San Francisco to the triumphs and challenges of a professional acting career in New York, WHERE WAS I? is a moving and often hilarious journey of a dedicated artist trying to make sense of it all.
WHERE WAS I? features costumes by Niamh McKeever, lighting by Robin A. Paterson, and set by James Fenton with a production team that includes Katie McHugh (production manager), Sarah Howell (stage manager), Robert Grogan (production assistant) and John Turner (graphic design).
Karen Ludwig's Broadway credits include Prelude To A Kiss with Steve Guttenberg and John Randolph, Broadway Bound with Joan Rivers, The Devils with Anne Bancroft, The Bacchae with Irene Pappas and many plays at the Public Theater. She was a member of Andre Gregory’s Manhattan Project for two years, with which she performed The Seagull and Wallace Shawn’s Our Late Night throughout the United States and Europe. The first film she appeared in was Woody Allen’s Manhattan. Recent film credits include Spiderman 2, Thirteen Days opposite Kevin Costner, and most recently Are We Officially Dating? with Zach Efron. TV credits include NYPD Blue, ER, Party of Five, Judging Amy, many Law & Order episodes, and an acclaimed turn as Ethel Rosenberg in HBO’s Citizen Cohn opposite James Woods. She taught acting and directing for 7 years at USC School for Cinema/TV and NYU Film School. Two-time Emmy Award winner Dorothy Lyman's directing credits include 75 episodes of The Nanny, the CBS sitcom Payne starring John Laroquette, and the Off-Broadway premiere of John Ford Noonan’s A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking starring Susan Sarandon. She began her career on soap operas including A World Apart, Edge of Night, and Another World before winning two Emmy's for her work on All My Children. She also starred on Mama's Family for 5 seasons. She has made guest appearances on TV shows including Alf, Battlestar Galactica, Reba, Bob, Murder She Wrote, CSI: Miami, and Elementary as well as the TV movie Tears and Laughter: The Joan and Melissa Rivers Story. Lyman made her Broadway debut in Dancing in the End Zone in 1985. Her stage credits include four Dramalogue Awards for A Rage in Tenure, which she wrote and starred in; Sam Shepard's Killer's Head; Marie Irene Fornes' Fefu and Her Friends; and Jean-Claude van Itallie's America Hurrah and The Serpent with The Open Theater. She is currently developing Enemy, a modern re-imagining of Ibsen"s Enemy of the People, which will premiere this winter in Mexico, before coming to New York. She has also produced and directed 2 narrative feature films, and a documentary about aging. When she is not directing, acting, writing or producing, she is a chicken farmer in Upstate New York.
