Hit rap musical by Drama Desk Award nominee Baba Brinkman extends Off-Broadway.

After an acclaimed premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Soho Playhouse has extended of the New York Premiere of RAP GUIDE TO RELIGION, a new musical written by and starring Drama Desk Award nominee Baba Brinkman (Rap Guide to Evolution). Directed by Darren Lee Cole, performances of this Off-Broadway premiere, which opened October 10, will run through December 13 at SoHo Playhouse.
Can science explain religion? RAP GUIDE TO RELIGION takes the audience on a hip-hop tour of scientific research into the origins of supernatural beliefs and sacred symbols. Why do humans believe in a higher power? What are those beliefs good for? And once they are gone, what can replace them?
Two post-performance talkbacks will also be presented. Sunday, December 7 will feature William Grassie, director of the Metanexus Institute and author of "The New Sciences of Religion" and Saturday, December 13 will feature Jonathan Haidt, author of the New York Times bestseller "The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion."
Baba Brinkman is an award winning Canadian rap artist, and playwright. He is also a scholar with a Masters in Medieval and Renaissance English Literature. His thesis drew parallels between the worlds of hip-hop music and literary poetry. After graduating in 2003, Baba began his career as a rap troubadour. To date Baba has written or co-written four hip-hop theatre shows, all of which have toured the world and played at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and off-Broadway. The Rap Guide to Evolution and The Canterbury Tales Remixed both recently played extended off-Broadway runs at the Soho Playhouse. The Rap Guide to Evolution won the prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award in Edinburgh and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award in New York. Baba also has appearances at several regional TED conferences and a guest performance on The Rachel Maddow Show. For his efforts to improve the public understanding of evolution, he won the NCSE’s Friend of Darwin Award in 2013.
