New York's King of Comedy, Mr. Showbiz himself brings his acclaimed act back to Times Square.
Thursday, October 9 at The Laurie Beechman Theatre
"A New York Institution" – The New York Times
He's Hill-arious! He's a real razzler dazzler. He's New York's superstar comedian and international entertainment phenomenon MR. MURRAY HILL! This fabulous star of stage, television, music videos, laptops, bingo halls and big screens has dazzled audiences the world over with his unique brand of interactive humor and old school showbiz. Now he brings his infamous “act,” MURRAY HILL & THE STIFF GIMLETS, a one-man comedy explosion with a swinging band back to Times Square. It will be presented Thursday, October 9 at 7pm at The Laurie Beechman Theatre inside West Bank Café (407 West 42nd Street at Ninth Avenue). Tickets are $20 with a $15 per person food/ drink minimum. For reservations call 212-352-3101 or visit www.SpinCycleNYC.com.
MURRAY HILL & THE STIFF GIMLETS will feature Hill's trademark blend of hammy Borscht Belt humor, irreverent monologues, joint-popping slapstick, so-bad-it's-gotta-be-good crooning, and freewheeling ad-libbing. He'll regale the audience with tales from his early showbiz days—like getting discovered by Don Rickles while bussing tables at The Copacabana; his fifth career comeback and chronic middle-aged crisis; and, of course, cavorting with and losing the ladies (including one of his 12 ex-fiancés, who dumped him for a younger, dashing and cerebral Regis Philbin). In short, be prepared for a mix of old-fashioned highball class with madcap contemporary humor and Hill-arious improv -- all underscored by a 4-piece band.
NYC nightlife legend, comedian, and renowned entertainer MURRAY HILL, “the hardest working middle-aged man in show business,” is a relentless retro shtick slinger. His razor sharp wit and frenetic showman antics have delighted folks worldwide for over a decade. He has been included in “Best of New York” lists in the Village Voice, Time Out, Paper, and New York Magazine; inducted into PAPER’s Nightlife Hall of Fame; selected as OUT magazine’s Top 100 influential performers; included in New York Magazine’s “Fifty Most Iconic Gender Benders of All Time” and named one of the top 12 gender-bending performers in NYC by Time Out NY. He just wrapped the first season of “SHOWBIZ,” his own pop culture show for MTV. Last year, he was a correspondent for Channel 4/UK’s show Dirty Digest and filmed The Murray Hill Show pilot for the network. He’s had a string of cameos on shows including HBO’s Bored to Death, STARZ’s Gravity, HBO’s Taxi Cab Confessions, BRAVO’s Real Housewives of New York. Currently, he is on a break from an international tour with burlesque queen Dita VonTeese. For more info, visit www.mrshowbiz.com.
THE STIFF GIMLETS are: 4-time ASCAP Award-winning bandleader Jesse Elder (piano), Matt Parker (tenor sax), Kenbal Zwerin (bass) and Arthur Vint (drums and rimshot specialist). After performing every Saturday for three years with Murray Hill at supper club Duane Park, the boys in the band and Murray developed a wildly entertaining showbiz chemistry. Like the improvisational musicians they are, when synced with Murray’s uninhibited improv, the shows take on a unique, chaotic energy every night. They have headlined with Murray Hill at Gramercy Theatre, Joe’s Pub, The Jazz Room, Knitting Factory, and Le Poison Rouge. They also perform as The Candy Shop Boys, providing soundtracks for live burlesques shows; they recently released their first record, Sugar Foot Stomp.
